One of my all-time favorite summer treats has to be a fruit smoothie. However, one problem I tend to encounter with these healthy treats is that often times there is an unnecessary amount of added sugar and preservatives to “enhance” taste and maintain freshness. In addition, while we’re all trying to keep our bodies bikini-ready, sometimes these smoothies can be packed with hidden calories and you can unknowingly consume half your daily calories before 10AM.
My method for avoiding these unwanted additives is by using overripe fruits, which I consider to be at their prime for making smoothies since they’re so sweet. This way, you can have a delicious drink without having to add extra sugar or those chemicals no one can pronounce.
Today I was rifling through my fridge and found blueberries and strawberries which had been pushed to the back of the shelf and forgotten about. By combining a handful of blueberries, 3 or 4 medium sized strawberries, and a few splashes of milk (I’m a cook, not a baker…I hate to measure!), I had all my smoothie ingredients. Blend and enjoy!
